The Importance of Address Accuracy in Aadhaar

Your Aadhaar card serves as a primary Proof of Address (PoA) across India.

Whether you are moving to a new city for a job or shifting to a new house, keeping this record updated is essential for banking, gas connections, and voter registration.

Method 1: Update with Documentary Proof (Standard Procedure)

If you have valid documents in your name, the process is straightforward.

UIDAI accepts over 40 types of documents including Electricity Bills (not older than 3 months), Water Bills, Bank Passbooks, Rent Agreements, and Ration Cards.

Online Process Steps:

  • Log in to the MyAadhaar portal using your Aadhaar number and OTP.
  • Select 'Update Address Online'.
  • Enter the new address details accurately as per the document.
  • Upload a scanned color copy of the PoA document.
  • Pay the nominal fee of ₹50.

Method 2: Update Without Proof (Head of Family - HoF Based)

This is a revolutionary feature for residents who do not have documents in their own name (like children, spouses, or parents living with family).

You can use the 'Head of Family' based update.

How HoF Update Works:

The HoF (father, mother, or spouse) must have a valid Aadhaar and a document proving their relationship with you (like a PDS card or Marriage Certificate).

If no relationship document exists, the HoF can provide a Self-Declaration in a UIDAI-prescribed format.

The HoF will then receive a notification to approve your request on the portal within 30 days.

Verification and Timeline

Once submitted, the request goes to the UIDAI back-end for verification.

It usually takes 5 to 15 days for the address to be updated.

You can track the status using the Service Request Number (SRN) provided at the end of the transaction.
